Capturing Without Distraction

This past Monday, I had the opportunity to photograph a regional parks and recreation event and award ceremony called TRAPS, and it was something special. I learned a lot, reconnected with old friends from other cities, and met a few new people along the way.

My main goal was to capture the key speakers for future use in presentations and marketing materials. The challenge? Doing it without being a distraction.

The event space was large, but the breakout sessions took place in smaller rooms where moving freely was not always possible. Here are three things that helped me stay mindful and effective in tight spaces.

1. Move with Intention

When working in small or crowded spaces, every move counts. I constantly asked myself, “How many shots can I get from this angle?” or “Should I save that spot for later?” This helped me move purposefully instead of wandering.

Our eyes are naturally drawn to movement, and for a new presenter, that distraction can be enough to throw them off. So if you need to move, do it quickly, quietly, and respectfully. Every step should have a reason.

2. Use the Right Equipment

Let’s face it, camera gear is not always discreet. Whether you use a DSLR, a mirrorless camera, or a GoPro, you are going to draw attention at some point. The key is to bring what you truly need and stop there.

The fewer clicks, flashes, and adjustments you make, the less noticeable you will be. Simplicity not only helps your subjects stay focused but also keeps you focused on your task.

3. Know How You Fit in the Space

This one is personal. I am not the smallest person in the room, and with camera gear in hand, I can easily become a distraction if I am not careful.

I have learned to give myself room to operate and to avoid tight spaces that make it hard to move without getting in someone’s way. Knowing how you physically fit into a space helps you stay out of sight and out of mind, just where a good photographer should be.

Final Thoughts

No matter how careful you are, you will always catch someone’s attention. But if you move with intention, use the right tools, and understand your presence in the room, you can capture powerful moments without taking focus away from them.
